Last year in my History of Photography class I learned about a photographer by the name of Philippe Halsman who worked for LIFE magazine most of his life. He was notorious for photographing famous actors, politicians, artists, etc...As he photographed he noticed that more often than not, people are trained at a young age to hide behind a mask to protect their insecurities. He wanted to somehow break that mask and let individual personality shine. He was having a lot of difficulty on how to reveal these people he photographed without being nosy or intrusive. Then came his idea of 'the jump'. The mask suddenly falls and the true self is revealed. It is a fun body of work in which many famous people such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Richard Nexon were photographed. For one of my projects I decided to do a modern day spin on the fun project done in the 5os (I just really needed a excuse to dress people up in fun 50s costumes, let's be honest:) ). It has been a blast!! Here is my first piece, Johnny and Jenna. Johnny is actually my husbands cousin, and Jenna is mine. They are the best of friends. Adorable I know. At the end I literally got teary eyed. True story.
Oh my goodness! I didn't know you were a photographer!?! You are great! How much do you charge? My mom is dying to get a "all family" family shot when my sister comes down for Thanksgiving. So that would mean... like 20 total? 11 Adults and 9 kids. Anyway, she would much rather use family than hire someone random. Let me know soon! SHe'll be so excited!
